Course Description

Scenes of startling physical transformation have always fascinated poets and other artists. Using the 鈥渢ransformation song鈥� from classical Thai drama as our starting point, in this course we鈥檒l survey iconic scenes of shapeshifting from the world of myth and fable, as well as contemporary responses to them. Among other topics, we鈥檒l consider how the mythic can add nuance and dimension to our poems. We鈥檒l consider how to stage a poem as a theatrical piece. Finally, we鈥檒l write back to these traditions with an original piece of 鈥渢ransformation.鈥�
