Arts and Humanities in the REAL World
At Avatara, as a fast growing technology company we look for individuals that have passion for tech and are looking to work hard in an extremely collaborative environment. Communication and/or people skills often outweigh technical experience or expertise. Critical thinking and the desire to learn and absorb new concepts put you on the career fast track in a growth company like ours. Because of this, we hire History, English, and Math Majors at the same pace as Business and Comp Sci Majors. It all comes down to the individual, not the classes the individual took while in school. For this reason, I always say study something you are passionate about, something you want to dig in and really understand and explore while you are in school. This will fuel your passion for learning and make you a well-rounded and interesting person in the long run.

There is an enormous part of the economy hungry for graduates with skills in analysis and communications skills students are honoring as they conduct close readings of texts, persuade their classmates in seminars and hone the style and structure of papers.

AAC&Us employer surveys confirm, year after year, that the skills employers value most in the new graduates they hire are not technical, job-specific skills, but written and oral communication, problem solving, and critical thinking are exactly the sort of soft skills humanities majors tend to excel in.

Lets not forget what Steve Jobs said as recently as the iPad 2 launch: Its in Apples DNA that technology alone is not enough. That its technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that yields us the result that makes our hearts sing.

Its no accident that many of our future medical school students attended liberal arts colleges. We look for students who are curious about and have an understanding of humanity, our history, our present and our future. An education that blends art and science not only helps them become great physicians who care about patients, but also helps them become exceptional citizens of the world.

Even STEM-centric jobs require basic writing skills: for example, its the second most-requested professional skill for engineering and IT occupations. However, many employers find graduates lacking in this area.
