Understanding Hormone Therapy on Fitness and Immune Health in Older Adults

Description of Study
Participate in this study to help us better understand how hormone therapy may be associated with healthy aging in older adults. The study will examine physical health, body composition, metabolism, strength, cardiovascular fitness, immune function, and blood-based biomarkers in adults who use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), as well as those who do not use hormone therapy.
Aging is associated with changes in hormones, muscle mass, body composition, metabolism, physical fitness, and immune function. This study will take a comprehensive look at these changes by assessing body composition, resting metabolic rate, muscular strength, VOâ‚‚max, immune function, and circulating biomarkers. By comparing these measures among older adults with and without HRT or TRT use, researchers hope to better understand how hormone therapy may be associated with physical function, immune health, and other biological features of healthy aging. This is an observational study, meaning that no hormone therapy or other treatment will be provided as part of the study.

Research Sample Needed
- 120 healthy males and females
Criteria
- Participants must be 50 years of age or older at the time of signing informed consent
- Capable of giving signed informed consent, which includes compliance with the requirements and restrictions listed in the Informed consent form and in this protocol
- Willing and able to donate blood samples
- Willing and able to be scanned using DEXA
- Willing and able to participate in written questionnaire
- Have body mass index (BMI) less than 30
- Have an autoimmune condition
- Intolerant or aversion to blood draws
- Are pregnant
- Current tobacco use, including smoking or smokeless tobacco
- History of cancer, hepatic disfunction
- Have and active infection
- Have blood borne pathogen disease
- Individuals currently undergoing gender-affirming hormone initiation
- Uncontrolled cardiovascular disease
- Severe pulmonary disease
- Musculoskeletal conditions limiting exercise
- Recent cardiovascular event
